Belt Force Limiter

Belt Force Limiter

The belt force limiter reduces the force of the seat belt on the vehicle occupants above a certain threshold. In conjunction with belt tensioners and airbags, it thus lessens the risk of upper body injuries to front passengers.

In order to achieve this, a torsion bar in the belt retractor distorts. The system then releases the belt at a predefined force level. The maximum shoulder belt force is thus reduced and the occupants are intercepted more gently by belt and airbag. Even without an additional airbag or belt tensioner (e.g. in the rear compartment), this belt force limiter reduces the load on occupants.
