So long, WRC!

Volkswagen has won a dozen world titles with the Polo R WRC in the FIA World Rally Championship – all drivers’, co-drivers’ and manufacturers’ championships for the last four years in a row! The company’s entire motorsports programme is now set to be restructured. The importance of future technologies for the Volkswagen Group must also be reflected in its involvement in motorsport.

“At the same time, Volkswagen intends to increase its commitment to customer sport. In addition to the Golf GTI TCR for circuit racing, and the Beetle GRC for Rallycross, we also want to provide premium products for customers in rallying, so we are planning to develop a new Polo that is compliant with the FIA’s R5 regulations”, announced Frank Welsch, Head of Technical Development, in front of some 200 motorsport staff in Hanover. Based on the latest generation of the Polo, this rally vehicle will be on the market from 2018 onwards.

In his speech, Frank Welsch emphasised the importance of teamwork in the company’s excellent results: “I would like to thank our drivers and co-drivers for their outstanding achievements. Not only are they extremely fast, but they are also exceptional ambassadors for the Volkswagen brand. The whole team, led by Managing Director of Volkswagen Motorsport Sven Smeets, has created the basis for our success thanks to the enormous commitment of each individual. We would like to continue working with this excellent team as we carry out the restructuring.”
